SEO Basics for a New Website

A new website starts with no authority, so search engines need clear signals about what each page is for. These basics cover most of what a small site needs.

1. Choose one topic per page

Each page should answer one question or serve one purpose. Pages that try to cover everything rank for nothing.

2. Write clear titles and descriptions

Put the main topic in the title tag, keep it under about 60 characters, and write a short meta description that explains why the page is worth opening.

3. Create helpful, original content

Search engines reward pages that solve a problem better than others. Add your own examples, steps and experience.

4. Structure with headings

Use headings to organize the page. They help readers scan and help search engines understand the topic.

5. Make the site fast and mobile friendly

Most searches happen on phones. Compress images, avoid heavy scripts and test your pages on a small screen.

6. Link your pages together

Internal links help visitors and crawlers find related pages. Use descriptive link text.

7. Submit a sitemap

Add your site to Google Search Console and submit a sitemap so new pages are discovered faster.

8. Be patient

New sites usually take weeks or months to gain traffic. Publish consistently and improve pages based on what you learn.
